SUNDAY 12th November (evening) – EFG London Jazz Festival: OLLIE HOWELL QUINTET

Ollie Howell is a London-based multi-award winning drummer, instrumentalist, composer, producer and broadcaster. A young Ollie was given his first pair of drum sticks by Radiohead’s Philip Selway and he is now championed by both industry guru Quincy Jones and jazz drumming legend Jimmy Cobb, as an emerging creative force. Quincy describes him as “an unbelievable drummer. So creative I couldn’t believe it … he really is a 360-degree beautiful young cat.” Ollie’s live shows and recordings impress fans with a punchy blend of creativity, cinematic electronic soundscapes and critically acclaimed compositions. His first album Sutures and Stitches was hailed by the Guardian, calling it ‘a fine debut’ and Mojo Magazine stating that his music ‘has delicious dynamic flow and an almost elegiac beauty’. His brand new album, ‘Self-Identity’, was released on Ropeadope in 2017 to critical acclaim, and the Sky Arts channel filmed a program around the making of the album, presented by Melvyn Bragg. Ollie is the first ever jazz recipient of a prestigious Sky Academy Arts Scholarship and was invited by Quincy Jones to perform the opening residency of his new jazz club in Dubai.
